Nose vs. Mouth: Which Is Best for Runners?

Nasal breathing humidifies, warms, and filters incoming air. It also encourages low-intensity control, making it useful during easy recovery runs or warm-ups. Inhaling through your nose forces your body to keep a steady pace, helping you maintain a relaxed effort. However, the nasal passages are relatively small. When you increase your speed or hit a steep hill, your muscles demand oxygen at a rate that nasal passages alone cannot provide.

Mouth breathing brings in maximum air volume quickly. When you run fast, taking in air through your open mouth delivers the oxygen your muscles need to convert glycogen into energy.

For most workouts, a hybrid approach works best. Inhale simultaneously through both your nose and your mouth, keeping your jaw relaxed. Exhale fully through your mouth to clear out carbon dioxide. While the exact cause remains a topic of ongoing discussion, coaches attribute it to diaphragm spasms, friction between abdominal membranes, or shallow breathing patterns.

If a sharp pain catches you mid-run, do not panic. You can relieve a side stitch without quitting your workout entirely.

First, slow your pace to an easy walk or jog. Take a deep, slow breath into your stomach, filling your lungs completely. As you exhale, bend forward slightly at the waist and gently press two fingers into the painful area.

Second, change your breathing cadence. Try exhaling whenever the foot opposite your pain hits the ground. For example, if you feel a stitch on your right side, exhale forcefully as your left foot strikes the road. This shifts landing stress away from the affected side of your diaphragm, allowing the cramp to release naturally.

Putting Breathing Technique Into Practice

Improving your breathing requires patience and consistent practice. Do not try to overhaul your entire routine on a hard workout day. Instead, introduce these adjustments slowly during short, low-stress runs.

Begin your warm-up by focusing solely on diaphragmatic breathing. Spend the first ten minutes checking in with your facial tension, jaw position, and posture. If you notice yourself breathing rapidly into your chest, drop your pace for sixty seconds and focus on deep, controlled belly breaths.

Over time, proper air intake will become automatic. By coordinating your breaths with your stride, using your mouth and nose together, and managing side stitches quickly, you will run longer distances with greater comfort and steady energy.
